New Bill Bars Payment to Tax Evaders
Senators Norm Coleman (R-Minn) and Carl Levin (D-Mich) introduced legislation that would withhold payment to healthcare providers who are delinquent on federal taxes.
The bill results after a recent report from the GAO noted that a large number of physicians are still receiving Medicare payments even though they owe federal taxes. The problem results from a lack of intercommunication between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
The proposed legislation will levy payments to fund outstanding taxes through participation in the Federal Payment Levy Program. Other components of the bill would allow unpaid student loans and child support to be recovered though the Federal Program.
