Small Suppliers Afraid of Competitive Bidding

A new competitive bidding process for Medicare Part B has been in the works for years. Echoing questions raised earlier this year, The Business Journal of Jacksonville reports the fears of local medical equipment manufacturer Genesys Durable Medical Equipment. Sonny Ukpong Jr., its operations manager, was quoted as saying: “Medicare is 70 to 80 percent of our general revenue. [The changes] are going to force suppliers out of business or make them change direction. […] That’s really unfair to the smaller people. If you’ve been in this business for five to 10 years and are trying to grow, it puts you in a compromising position.”

CMS has yet to finalize how this system will work and dedicated a section of its web site to the topic where it plans to release updates in the months to come.
