Texas Senate Committee Approves Infection Monitoring

The Texas Senate Health and Human Services Committee approved legislation March 20th that will require hospitals to report the incidence of infection rates. According to Committee Chair Jane Nelson, the intent of the legislation is to arm patients with information when they choose hospitals. Texas Sen. Royce West questioned effects of the bill on patients pursuing malpractice cases.

The Bill requires reporting infection rates in the critical care setting among patients who receive IV treatment and also rates for surgical procedures. Surgical data will be delineated by the type of procedure performed. Hospitals will report data quarterly, which will then be reviewed by the State and published on a website.
