256-slice Scanner Launched by Philips

The 256-slice Brilliance iCT scanner was recently launched by Philips. According to the company, this new system can scan the heart in less than two beats of the muscle. The system was showcased at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), as reported in the news release from Philips.

The new imaging machine, because of the rapidity within which images can be completed, reduces the amount of radiation exposure to patients up to eighty percent. Scanning time is reduced by a gantry which rotates at a rate of four times per second. This is over twenty percent faster than current systems.

One consideration in the design of the iBrilliance is an improved experience for each patient, which is supposedly increased secondary to a more rapidly completed scan.

Images procured with the Brilliance iCT have high resolution providing clarity in 3-D depictions of organs examined. Complete images of an entire organ may be obtained with the tool, including both the brain and heart. As well, images across time detailing changes can be captured.

The Brilliance incorporates Philips Essence technology; including new x-ray tubing, detectors and reconstruction design elements. The Essence technology was also incorporated into the new Philips 64-channel system. Essence allows clinicians to access images throughout a healthcare facility as well as remotely.
