Biomarker Based Sepsis Test to be Launched

A new biomarker-based sepsis test will be launched (pdf) before the end of 2008. The SIQNATURE, from SIRS Lab, is a molecular diagnostic test that can diagnose the deadly infection at its earliest stages. The test can also be used to monitor disease progression. The test was introduced at the International Shock Congress in Cologne.

The SIRS Lab was able to identify the transcriptomic biomarkers associated with sepsis in its early stage. These markers are also more reliable than the markers currently utilized to assess patients for sepsis.

Translation of the biomarkers is accompanied with a biostatistical program developed by the company. Test results produced provide definitive information about both the presence and severity of disease. The test was validated in a cohort of 600 patients at Jena University Hospital.

The company suggests that the new tool can dramatically improve the treatment of patients with severe sepsis, primarily by identifying patients early in the course of disease. The company suggests that the SIQNATURE may be a breakthrough in diagnostics for sepsis.

Sepsis is an aggressive infection that affects the entire body systemically. It is one of the main causes of death around the world with a mortality rate of 50 percent. It is projected that almost two million people die from sepsis around the world.
