CMS Evaluates Reimbursement of CT Colonography
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is evaluating providing reimbursement of CT colonography as a tool for colon cancer screening. The organization commenced a national coverage analysis, considering the existing evidence, to determine if reimbursement is warranted. Health Imaging posted the news on their website.
Under current guidelines, CMS provides reimbursement for sigmoidoscopy, barium enema, blood testing, and colonoscopy. The national coverage determination process is the means by which CMS can alter the list of tests that are covered, in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations.
During the determination process, CMS is requesting public comments. The comment period is open through June 18th. Information of particular interest includes previously completed clinical trials, as well as scientific information describing the technology employed to complete CT colonography.
Recent recommendations published by the American Cancer Society include use of CT colonography as an appropriate, recommended tool for colon cancer screening. News of the updated guidelines was published on HospitalBuyer. CMS does not currently provide reimbursement for this screening modality.
