Device Improves Detection of HIV Infection

An Israeli based company claims that they have developed a device that can improve detection of HIV, by stimulating cells to produce antigens. The Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute describes the product, which was also described on IBN Live.

The company’s product, the SMARTube, encourages blood specimens to produce antigens. This tool can be used for diagnosis of both HCV and HIV. Blood samples are procured from patients, which are then incubated in the device over a period of three to five days. The solution in the tube stimulates the growth of antibodies, if present. These antibodies can be detected with routine laboratory analysis for HIV infection.

One current issue faced by clinicians is the time period between infection and development of antigens to the disease. Antigens may not begin production until one to six months after the time of infection, which prevents detection at earliest stages. Failure to detect disease prevents patients from receiving treatment and also increases the likelihood that others will become infected.

Testing of the device indicates that this approach fosters disease detection earlier than other methods. Studies have shown that HIV infection can be detected within one week after infection.

Studies have been completed in Israel, as well as Africa, Mexico, and China. The company has already procured approval from the European community. Studies and approval in the United States have yet to be completed.
