HIV Monitoring Test Approved

A new laboratory test that uses polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to evaluate HIV viral load was approved by the FDA. The test, RealTime HIV-1, was developed by Abbott to be used in conjunction with the company’s M200, an automated laboratory system to evaluate RNA and DNA.

The test is useful for diagnostic purposes, as well as ongoing monitoring of disease state. It measures the three major HIV groups (major, outlier, and new) and the known subtypes within the major category.

The system can provide rapid results, within less than five hours according to a report in Clinical Lab Products.
