Intel Launches First Medical Device for Home-Based Monitoring

Intel is entering the foray of home-based healthcare diagnostics. On September 1st, the company introduced their Intel Health Guide. The device provides high tech monitoring of patients with chronic health conditions and was approved for marketing by the Food and Drug Administration, as described in the press release from Intel.

The device is a touch-screen computer system with a 10.5-inch monitor. It integrates communication tools such as video conferencing capabilities and email, along with a multimedia educational library for patients and patient medication reminders.

A variety of different medical monitoring tools are integrated to collect different vital signs including blood-oxygen levels, weight, and blood pressure. The Intel Health Guide is also compatible with glucose monitors and peak flow meters.

The device can be set to automatically complete at-home “visits” with patients at needed intervals, including multiple times daily. During such, vital signs are collected and patient symptoms are assessed. This information is then transmitted digitally to healthcare providers through a secure server.

The company spent over two years developing the system, including testing in both the United States and United Kingdom. This device is particularly intended for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or congestive heart failure. According to the article, the company plans to introduce other medical devices in the future.

Market analysts suggest that the home diagnostics market is going to exponentially expand over the coming years. Estimates suggest that it may reach $2.5 billion by 2012.
