New Chromogenic Medium Tests Identify Candida

Bio-Rad Laboratories, Incorporated has launched a new chromogenic medium that is used to isolate several forms of Candida, the CandiSelect 4. News of the product introduction was described by Medcompare.

The new compound can selectively isolate multiple forms of Candida, a type of yeast that causes many types of infections.
The test is used to correctly identify and differentiate betweenCandida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Candida glabrata, and Candida kruseli. These are the most prevalent forms of Candida seen in the healthcare setting.

These types of infection are common causes of nosocomial infections. In addition, they are associated with increased healthcare costs, as well as patient morbidity and mortality. Rapid diagnosis of these infections is critical so that clinicians may identify the appropriate treatment protocol.

Candida species are known to colonize on the mouth, vagina, stool, and skin. Other regions of the body, including tissue, can be infected. Patients that are immunocompromised are at higher risk for infection with Candida strains. Data published last year in the Journal of Medical Microbiology indicates that the rate of fungal infections has been increasing during the past twenty years.
