One Hour Tests from Cepheid Approved

Cepheid Incorporated received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for new rapid diagnostic tests, the Xpert MRSA/SA Blood Culture (BC) test. This system assesses patients for the presence of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA).

These tests are completed with the company’s GeneXpert system. The test is indicated for blood culture specimen bottles with gram-positive cocci. Test results are available within one hour. An advantage of this system is the combination of molecular testing with rapid turn-around.

Benefits of this new diagnostic tool include better patient treatment. Patient’s whose source of infection is specifically determined can be treated with the appropriate therapy, rather than broad spectrum antibiotics. As well, appropriate measures can be taken to reduce transmission.

The company’s management team notes that this new approval broadens the company’s portfolio of diagnostic tests. In fact, it is suggested that Cepheid offers the broadest range of products for SA and MRSA rapid detection.
