Synctial Virus Detection Tests Cleared by FDA

Meridian Biosciences, Incorporated announced receipt of marketing clearance for two new products to detect the presence of synctial virus, for influenza A and B viruses and the respiratory virus; these both detect upper respiratory illness.

The tests utilize a new diagnostic approach developed by the organization; which rapidly produces rapid test results. The testing approach further provides for space savings and improvements in safety.

Rapid results provide physicians with immediate information to determine the treatment approach; such as antiviral medications. Negative test results can prevent prescribing of antibiotics, which do not have any effect on these conditions.

The TRU FLU detects both influenza A and B. The TRU RSV detects the presence of respiratory synctial viruses.

RSV is the most common cause of respiratory disease in young children. Almost 200,000 patients are hospitalized for the flu and 36,000 patients die every year from the illness.
