Silver-Coated Luer Access Device Introduced

The first antibacterial Luer Access Device (LAD) impregnated with silver was approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The new system, ULTRASITE Ag Luer Access Device, was developed by B Braun Medical, Incorporated. The device is inteded to reduce the opportunity for catheter-related infections of the bloodstream.

The device incorporates silver ion technology which reduces 99.99 percent of bacteria. Silver covers all external and fluid path surfaces. Organisms destroyed include MRSE, MRSA, pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter aerogenes among others over a 96-hour product life cycle.

Additional features of the system include needle-free access to protect against needlestick injuries. The device can be used with any standard injection cap systems and is also compatible with may of the pre-filled medication systems on the market. The system also has positive displacement to minimize the likelihood of catheter occlusions.

The new device is just one component of the company’s commitment to the prevention of catheter related bloodstream infections. B. Braun launched a campaign “Vein Starts Here” that highlights the importance of proper care for the catheter hub and good clinical practices related to catheter care.
