VA Infection Program Goes National

The Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Pittsburgh implemented a program to reduce the number of MRSA infections.

The center assessed all patients for MRSA with a nasal swab at the time of admission, transfer, or discharge. Other strategies include isolating patients who have MRSA, re-emphasizing the importance of hygienic measures such as hand washing, and developing a culture within a the facility that is vigilant about infection control.

MRSA transmission is a significant problem faced by healthcare facilities. The bacteria can be transmitted by direct contact. Over 100,000 hospitalizations each year result from MRSA infections.
