AHIP Asks Congress for Watchdog
America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) are requesting that the U.S. Congress create a new agency to evaluate medical therapies in the interest of reducing growing costs for healthcare.
The goal of the new agency will be ongoing evaluation of new and existing treatments in the context of cost and outcomes to help better guide healthcare practices. This would conceivably be focused on drug and device treatments.
Another request from the group is to expand the post-marketing assessment and oversight of the FDA.
The final request is reformation to the medical malpractice process. AHIP is recommending creation of state boards to oversee claims in order to eliminate those cases brought without legitimacy. The boards would also be responsible for evaluating claims brought against health insurers.
