Baxter’s IV Connector to Reduce Infections Approved
The V-Link Luer-activated device (LAD) with VitalShield protective coating, manufactured by Baxter, received marketing approval from the FDA. News of the approval was detailed on the company’s website.
The V-Link LAD inner and outer surfaces are both coated with VitaShield, the company’s proprietary silver technology. The anti-microbial properties of silver are well documented. The VitalShield formulation is effective at reducing an array of microorganisms and protects against the growth and contamination of such within the V-Link LAD.
This product is the first antimicrobial coated needleless intravenous (IV) connector. 99.9 percent of infectious organisms, specifically those associated with catheter-related bloodstream infections, are killed with the device. Organisms included are MRSA, which is highly resistant to antibiotic treatment.
This product is the first in a new line from Baxter’s Medication Delivery business, the Vital Infusion Systems product line. This new line is geared to help mitigate risks associated with intravenous therapies. The company’s goal is to create products to combat pathogens and improve the safety within the healthcare environment. Marketing of the V-Link LAD will commence next year, according to Baxter.
Almost 19,000 patients die every year secondary to MRSA infections, according to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
