Blood Product Solution Cleared for Commercial Marketing

A new transfusion safety management system from IntelliDOT Corporation, the IntelliDOT Blood Product Administration (IntelliDOT BPA), was cleared for commercial marketing in the United States. The entire system includes an array of tools and covers the complete process from the time the product leaves the blood bank until it is transfused.

The IntelliDOT BPA is a nurse-centric, wireless workflow management (pdf) system. The array of system components are described on the company website. The tool provides caregivers with the information that they require at the actual point of care. It performs comprehensive safety checks with a single system.

The solution incorporates wireless printers, a software application, wireless handheld barcode scanners, and computers. The system is anchored within the IntelliDOT CAREt System, with IntelliDOT BPA being another component. The CAREt system supports administration of drugs.

Features allow clinicians to easily learn how to navigate the tool, which is based on a wireless, handheld, lightweight device. Nursing staff can learn how to work the tool in one shift. The system can also be modified to meet the distinct needs of a given institution.

Safety features of the system assure that the correct patients undergo blood draws and that blood is later transfused to the correct patient. It also supports laboratory personnel to ensure that specimens are correctly linked with blood products or blood. An additional safety feature is the means to immediately document adverse events if they should occur.

The tool additionally ensures that hospitals maintain their compliance with requirements from the Joint Commission. Features to support such include matching barcodes on patient wristbands with barcodes on specimens procured. Clinicians are also alerted in the case that there is a mismatch.
