Closed Blood Collection System Cleared

The Saf-T Closed Blood Collection System, manufactured, by Smiths Medical, has received 501(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration. The system is designed for use in both syringe blood draw and transfer applications. News describing the approval of the closed blood collection system was posted on the company’s website.

The new system is an expansion of the company’s existing line of Saf-T Wing Blood Collection Devices. It is akin to the Saf-T Wing Blood Collection Set in its design. A notable difference is that the new system can accomodate a Saf-T Wing or male Luer connector to access the vein. A sample syringe attachment using a female Luer connector is incorporated into both the systems.

Following initial set up of the system, minimal manipulation of Luer connectors is necessary. This profile reduces the risk for sample contamination. The system is created for those situations that require controlled syringe draws.

Two configurations of the Saf-T Closed Blood Collection System area available. Both of these systems utilize a female Luer to attach to the syringe, a Saf-T holder device which is permanently attached that is used for blood transfer to blood collection tubs, and a clamp that directs bloodflow.
