Electronic Health Record Expansion

Humana and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida launched a new electronic health record. The Availity Care Profile (ACP) was released exclusively in Tampa, but will be expanded to other areas in Florida shortly, including Tallahassee and Miami.

The new record systems collects patient information to present a complete view of a patient’s medical record from a variety of healthcare providers obtained by collecting information from healthcare payers. The system leverages the existing electronic software systems already used by insurers.

The goal of the system is to improve patient safety and reduce unnecessary testing. It can also assist with decision making, as it increases the amount of data that clinicians have access to which describes a patient’s health history.

One unique translation of this system is use with patients who are unable to provide medical histories, either due to dementia or severe injury which prevents communication.
