FDA Commences Massive Recruiting Effort
In order to fulfill an expanding array of obligations and secure the necessary resources to meet such, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has commenced a massive hiring initiative to continue over a number of years. The FDA posted the news on their website, including the planned job fairs.
Included among the professionals who are in demand are chemists, mathematical statisticians, investigators, pharmacists, epidemiologists, chemists, biologists, and other professionals. The FDA hopes to recruit more than 600 new staff members during the 2008 fiscal year, as well as fill 700 vacant positions.
These individuals are all members of a staff charged with ensuring the safety of medical devices, food, cosmetics, and other products. The onus on the Agency increased with new responsibilities delineated in the passage of the FDA Amendments Act of 2007, the Food Protection Plan and the Import Safety Action Plan.
As well, the FDA had been under increasing scrutiny secondary to scandals related to medications removed from the market, tainted pharmaceuticals imported from China, and concerns about the safety of other products. The FDA Commissioner has been battling the Bush Administration with respect to budget funding for the coming fiscal year, as noted on HospitalBuyer.
