Masimo Ventricular Index Validated

The Pleth Variability Index (PVI) from Masimo has undergone an objective and independent study that validates use of the system as a means to quantitatively measure ventricular preload. The news was described on the 24 x 7 Weekly Jolt.

PVI is the newest component of the Rainbow SET technology platform from Masimo. The system provides for quantitative, noninvasive, continuous monitoring of changes in an individual’s perfusion index. PVI is a function of pulse oximeter waveform analysis.

As such, the system captures volume changes that are noteworthy as these may create changes in systemic circulation and, moreover, compromise heart functioning. The system may be ideal to monitor fluid responsiveness and noninvasive hypovolemia detection.

The study was completed by a team of researchers in France at the Louis Pradel Hospital. The team notes that this study is the first to validate the use of PVI to detect changes in ventricular preload.
