New Contrast Delivery System Launched
Covidien announced the launch of a new contrast delivery system, the Optistar Elite Contrast Delivery System. The product was recently cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. The device was already cleared for marketing in Europe and marketing applications are pending in other countries.
The system is indicated to deliver contrast media-related drugs into patient vasculature to support imaging assessment with magnetic resonance. The tool is an updated iteration of the company’s previously released Optistar LE model. The company suggests that this system will provide improved performance and greater reliability in the delivery of contrast materials.
One key feature of the device is Patency Check, which prevents the possibility of extravasation. This component also supports workflow and clinical efficiency, as well as reducing the likelihood of errors. The injector powerhead and control consoles feature a visual alert to warn clinicians of blockage. This feature additionally supports patient comfort and safety.
The system was designed to work with the Ultraject prefilled syringes with contrast media from Covidien. Prefilled syringes can reduce the incidence of errors related to medication errors that occur with manual filling of syringes. This also negates the need to label and prepare syringes; supporting requirements from the Joint Commission.
The Optistar Elite’s powerhead buttons are color coordinated with the prefilled syringes of the Ultraject. This further minimizes the possibility of medication errors by supporting correct system set up. The powerhead can be controlled by either the injector or the control console.
The system’s Timing Bolus feature allows a designated amount of contrast material to be delivered at a specific time. This supports optimization of the imaging agent transit time to the location of scanning. This further supports procurement of the maximum amount of diagnostic information.
