Patient Safety Data Reporting Features Issued by AHRQ

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) issued guidelines describing the appropriate components for reporting patient safety data. News of the publication of the reporting formats and common definitions was described by Health Data Management; the specifics were delineated in the Federal Register.

The common reporting terminology, Common Formats, Version 0.1 Beta, was established to simplify both collection and reporting of data related to patient safety. The data described applies to voluntary data reporting.

These regulations are an extension of the Patient Safety Act. That legislative effort authorizes the reporting of data to organizations that support patient safety. One component of the effort is that data be collected in a standardized format when possible.
