Patient Wristband System Launched by Zebra
The first cartridge-based patient identification system was launched by Zebra Technologies. The new system was designed to simplify the system to print patient wristbands that include bar-codes, increasing efficiency and reducing the opportunity for errors.
The solution utilizes a HC100 thermal printer, which has a small footprint, and cartridges that are simple to load. Those include Zebra’s Z Band direct thermal wristband. An additional feature of the bands is antimicrobial coating, which are available in an array of sizes. This is the only available wristband to incorporate this anti-infective measure.
The solution also utilizes a smart card. This component automatically calibrates for the band size to be created and optimizes the intensity of printing. The bar codes printed on the label remain smudge-free, even if they come into contact with blood, soap, water, or other liquid.
The team from Zebra Technologies notes the importance of patient wristbands in safety considerations. A substantial number of adverse events can be attributed to illegible or missing wristbands. The Zebra system prints patient labels on demand, which is unique compared to other available wristbands.
Bar-coded wristbands can streamline the process for correctly identifying patients before completing procedures or delivering medications. Properly identifying patients is a key means to reduce the opportunity for error.
