Rewards Hinge on Safety and Quality
Executive salary is often contingent upon bonuses awarded for achieving performance goals. Some hospitals are now including compliance with safety measure as another target execs must achieve to receive the bonuses.
With the increasing attention on issues related to patient safety, hospitals have looked at other service industries to create programs that will be successful. And linking a hospital executive’s bonus with safety measures is a key means to integrate a top-down approach for success.
Already such programs have been implemented in non-profit facilities, half of which tie incentives to performance. The next step is expanding performance measures to include patient safety. See the Boston Globe for further coverage.
