Stroke Legislation Passed
The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill in late March, the Stroke Treatment and Ongoing Prevention (STOP Stroke) Act of 2007. The intent of the bill is to improve treatment and raise awareness about stroke symptoms.
The STOP Stroke Act provides funding for a national campaign to educate the public about stroke prevention, symptoms and warning signs. It also creates a grant program to help states ensure high quality care for patients. A national registry for stroke cases (the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry) will be developed as part of an effort to develop and share best practices. The final component is creation of training opportunities for healthcare professionals in the newest techniques for stroke prevention and treatment.
