Cerner Software System Adopted by MedStar Health

MedStar Health, the largest health system in the Baltimore/Washington area has signed an agreement with Cerner Corporation. The financial terms of the contract were not publicly disclosed, according to the press release issued by Cerner.

Under terms of the deal, MedStar will deploy the Cerner Millenium software program at all of the organization’s seven hospitals. The software system automates pharmacy and laboratory operations, clinician documentation, bedside care activities, and medication administration processes. These products from Cerner are replacing existing health information technology solutions that have been used by MedStar facilities.

Cerner executives note the critical role of information technology tools in the care delivery process. The company opted for the Cerner solution because of the product focus on delivering patients with high quality healthcare. Other benefits offered by the solutions include the ability to consolidate and standardize operations, which can lead to system efficiencies and improved safety for patients.

The MedStar hospitals serve more than 147,000 inpatients and over 1.5 million outpatients on an annual basis. Five of the MedStar hospitals have won recognition by being named among “America’s Best Hospitals” by U.S. News and World Reports.
