Harvard and Glaxo Announce Stem Cell Collaboration
The Stem Cell Institute at Harvard and GlazoSmithKline (GSK) recently signed a collaborative agreement, whereby the two will be working together to leverage stem cell science to build new medicines. The $25 million agreement will extend over a five-year period.
GSK announced that its financial support will be dedicated to a number of different specialties including heart disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disease, neuroscience, obesity, and cancer. Specific attention will be given to disease areas which have limited treatment options available.
Research is planned for at least four hospitals affiliated with Harvard. The pharmaceutical giant will provide an annual grant program for early stages of research investigating stem cell biology.
One intent of the collaboration is to allow academic researchers the opportunity to work directly with pharmaceutical researchers. A staff exchange program will be developed, whereby researchers will have the chance to work in the other laboratories.
