ProMedica Signs with McKesson
ProMedica Health System is a non-profit health system based in Toledo. The organization recently completed a contract with McKesson to begin using a wide variety of medication distribution services, pharmacy automation, and clinical solutions. The news was posted on the ProMedica website.
In considering various providers of healthcare information technology tools, McKesson was chosen by ProMedica because of the availability of a complete end-to-end system for both clinical automation and patient safety. Drug safety is supported by a system that validates medication safety from the time of drug distribution to the point-of-care.
A bar code system is utilized during drug distribution to eliminate errors associated with look- or sound-alike drugs. The system used in the pharmacy employs a set of notifications; for example, an alert for drug interaction. These tools will accelerate the speed of drug delivery and improve the accuracy of medication distributed.
Bar coding technology through the McKesson Horizon Admin-Rx, will also be used at the point-of-care. Patients will have bar codes added to their identification bands as will medications. This system will support delivery of the appropriate therapy to patients. An additional McKesson system will support medication inventory management.
The goal of implementing the McKesson tools is to advance patient safety and healthcare quality efforts and streamline operations across the entire ProMedica system. Additional benefits anticipated include reduced healthcare costs.
