IRS Allows EHR Assistance
On May 11th, the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) released a memo indicating that hospitals may provide doctors with financial assistance to obtain electronic medical records (EMRs) without risking revocation of status as a non-profit institution. This decision is in line with regulations issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Hospitals must follow certain regulations to maintain this status, following HHS guidelines. Those include that the hospital must offer both the same compensation and technology to all physician staff members. As well, hospitals must be able to access the EMRs.
