Device Group Proposes Health Plan
The Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) released its plan for universal health coverage on June 21st in a press release. The organization is the trade group for medical device manufacturers.
The plan would require that U.S. residents purchase their own health insurance coverage. Costs would be determined on a sliding scale basis as a percentage of total income. Tax credits would be offered to help offset costs. Medicaid would be made available for persons with disabilities or those with low income. Disabled individuals not eligible for Medicaid coverage would also be eligible to purchase health insurance similar to Medicaid.
An additional component of the program is the promotion of efficient and quality care, as well as provider comparison tools for patients. Quality care practices may be rewarded with bonuses. The plan also addresses the importance of integrating health promotion and disease prevention practices.
The group proposes that the federal government establish benchmarks describing minimum health insurance coverage requirements. Enforcement of such would be the responsibility of individual states.
