Applied Biosystems to Combine with Invitrogen
Invitrogen Corporation announced their plans to acquire Applied Biosystems from Applera Corporation. The deal has already been blessed by the Boards for both companies. The approval of shareholders is still pending, as well as that of regulatory agencies. The purchase price is $6.7 billion in a “cash-and-swap” exchange and the resulting company will be a huge biotechnology organization, with the potential to be a global leader based.
Applied Biosystems develops services and software used in the life sciences, including research endeavors. Invitrogen develops technologies used in the same sector. These services will be leveraged together to support the analysis of nucleic proteins and acids.
Applications from Applied Biosystems are also used for human identity testing, including paternity testing and forensic applications. Other businesses that use these tools include safety and quality testing and biosecurity.
Both of these organizations are based in California. The combined portfolios of the two organizations will include more than 3,600 different licenses and patents that address an array of research issues. The new organization, Applied Biosystems, will be based in Carlsbad, California.
