Philips Purchasing Visicu

Visicu, Incorporated will be acquired by Royal Philips Electronics. The total deal is approximately $430 million, or $12 per share. Visicu issued a press release about the pending deal.

The deal was already approved by the Visicu Board of Directors, who also recommended that company shareholders approve the transaction. Assuming necessary approvals are achieved, the deal is expected to close during the first quarter of next year.

Visicu provides clinical IT and other services. Their clinical IT products allow critical care staff to monitor patients in the intensive care setting remotely.

One of the company’s dedicated products is their eICU system which allows continuous, 24 x 7 monitoring of acutely ill patients. Caregivers are linked to patients using both video and voice tools. eICU also provides caregivers with tools for clinical decision-making based on best practice guidelines. Data indicates that this system both reduces costs in the critical care setting while improving overall patient safety.

Specific products from Visicu noted by Philips include clinical decision support technology and remote patient monitoring tools used in the eICU system. Those are planned to be integrated with Philips’s patient monitors. This will foster growth for Philips in the critical care arena.
