Hopkins Model Improves Patient Safety
A new model aimed at improving the safety of inpatients derived by clinicians at Johns Hopkins University and supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality noted a significant reduction in catheter-related bloodstream infections in the intensive care setting.
The model addresses change and operations by targeting healthcare workers. It further delineates a systematic approach to identify, adopt, and assess evidence-based models to decrease adverse events.
The model also incorporates a frank approach to learning from previous errors on both the individual staff level as well as hospital leaders. This approach is complemented by a comprehensive unit-based safety program to support cultural change in treating errors as learning opportunities.
Efforts to support overall organizational change and, moreover, acknowledge the reality of making mistakes, provide a window of opportunity to change behavior in a meaningful way.
