AMIA Announces New Leadership

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) announced the appointment of a new chief executive officer and president, Edward Shortliffe, MD, PhD, MACP, FACMI. He is one of the founding member of the AMIA association.

Dr. Shortliffe is replacing Don E. Detmer, MD, MA. Mr. Detmer has served as both the president and CEO of the organization since 2004. During his tenure, Dr. Detmer oversaw the transition of AMIA’s role in the community as the leading entity for health and biomedical informatics. This occurred through a series of enhancements to the organization’s programs and initiatives.

Other initiatives included improvements to operational quality and efficiency. These efforts have all contributed to both the global and national presence of AMIA. Overall, this has further solidified the relevance and strength of the organization’s brand.

Dr. Shortliffe is one of the founding members of the AMIA. He will commence his new post next summer, starting in July. Dr. Detmer lauds the appointment of Dr. Shortliffe as the incoming agency executive and detailed plans to collaborate, ensuring a simplified transition period.
