Deputy IT Coordinator at HHS Named
Charles Friedman, Ph.D. was named the Deputy National Coordinator of Health Information Technology (IT) at the Department of Health and Human Services in the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC). He was appointed by the ONC National Coordinator, Robert Kolodner, M.D. The Office issued a news release.
In that capacity, he will serve as the operations officer for initiatives coming forth from that office. Dr. Friedman will support efforts to develop, maintain, and direct implementation of strategic plans to foster the adoption IT through national efforts to improve safety and quality of healthcare.
Dr. Friedman has been serving as the senior adviser to Dr. Kolodner during the past six months. He previously held the post of Associate Director of Research Informatics and Information Technology at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, one of the Institutes at the National Institutes of Health. Prior to that, he also held the post of Senior Scholar at the National Library of Medicine, as well as Professor and Associate Vice Chancellor for Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Friedman has published over 150 different articles in scientific journals. He was president of the American College of Medical Informatics and is also an elected fellow of the organization. His research interest included efforts on building information technology tools into healthcare, as well as means to assess these efforts.
