New Chief at CMS
Following Mark McClellan’s resignation as Chief of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), President Bush was left with a gap in oversight for the federal health programs. He recently named Kerry N. Weems as his choice of successsor to lead the agency. The choice must still be confirmed by the Senate.
Weems is currently serving as Deputy Chief of Staff at Health and Human Services (HHS) under HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt. Weems has been particularly instrumental in advising Leavitt about budget issues in the face of growing healthcare costs.
Bush is also recommending Teri David Troy as the Deputy Secretary at HHS. Troy is currently an advisor to the president on domestic policy acting as a Deputy Assistant.
