Florida Medicaid Unlaunches EHR Pilot

The Medicaid program in Leon County, Florida has implemented a program that provides recipients with their own electronic health records. The effort is being orchestrated by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, as reported by the American Medical Association News.

The program commenced in November of 2007 and will run four months, through February 2008. The effort underway is intended to provide each Medicaid recipient in the County with their own unique electronic health record.

The EDS CareNetwork Solutions, as the program is entitled, was developed from an electronic health records program implemented by CentriHealth. That system was designed to utilize the procedural and diagnostic codes from bill to Medicaid to populate medical information into electronic records systems. EDS Solutions then derives a file for each patient with this information.

The infrastructure to collect this information is already supported through the Florida Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS), which electronically captures these codes through submission of claims. As well, almost 98 percent of clinicians in the State file claims with Medicaid electronically.

The claims files from MMIS will be used to extrapolate patient data as described into an individual patient record. Information that can be collected includes procedures performed such as x-rays, health information, and radiology studies.
