Improving Handwashing
Means to improve hygiene and reduce transmission of infectious agents within the healthcare setting is an ongoing source of investigation in the medical community. Swiss researchers report on findings from a study that assessed two different modalities to improve hand-washing;a liquid-based handrub and a gel-based formula that were given to practitioners to carry in their pockets.
Researchers noted poor levels of compliance at the study outset. They noted a 15 percent increase in hand washing simply by providing a product for workers to carry.
Clinicians were more likely to follow cleansing rituals with the gel compared to the liquid. Nurses were more compliant than physicians.
Self-report indicated that the gel actually improved skin condition. This is an important factor in procuring compliance.
