NPI Deadline Extended

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is allowing (pdf) provider organizations and health plans a 12 month grace period to comply with the National Provider Identification Rule (NPI), as long as organizations have been making strides to ensure compliance and created an appropriate contingency plan. Final compliance must be achieved by May 23rd of next year.

The NPI rule was established by CMS in January 2004. It requires use of a ten digit identifier for the majority of financial and administrative transactions of payers and providers. CMS providers organizations with their unique identifiers.

The change to allow contingency plans for the next year resulted after reports to CMS indicated that large numbers of providers and payers not ready to meet the looming May 23rd deadline.
