Brigham Evaluates RFID Asset Tracking

A number of healthcare institutions have undertaken projects to evaluate the benefits of implementing RFID tracking programs. Brigham and Women’s Hospital did such, considering the losses to hospital inventory and the cost associated with such losses.

The system implemented at the Boston facility uses indoor positioning to track items which are frequently misplaced. When equipment is moved from its standard location, alarms sound.

At this point, the facility has almost 3,000 items tagged for RFID monitoring. They plan to expand both the number of items (expected to double), as well as the expanse of the wireless network to capture RFID.

One of the lessons learned for the team included how to respond to the alarm system. In this instance, the hospital pages unit managers when a piece of equipment is removed from its usual location.

Inputting an RFID system may offer efficiency and cost savings benefits, numerous healthcare organizations are currently evaluating those outcomes. This report highlights the importance of further placing the technology within the framework of operations. Modified practices, coupled with RFID, may be the best means to leverage the technology.
