Robot Adds RFID Features

Aethon, a healthcare technology company based in Pittsburgh, developed a robotic assistant named Tug that can perform simple tasks. The newest iteration of the robot, Homer, has been upgraded with RFID tools.

Homer is now undergoing testing at six hospitals (all who had been using Tug) to locate and retrieve assets that have RFID tracking.

As originally developed, Tug would perform tasks such as picking up specimens from a patient’s room and deliver them to the lab. With RFID tracking, Tug-turned-Homer can also document the location of resources throughout the hospital while completing other errands. The system can also conduct inventory analysis.
