AMA Highlights Importance of Vendor Support for Technical System

A recent article published by the American Medical News (AMNews) highlights the importance of considering how technology vendor handles system problems and issues after deployment. This is an important consideration with respect to choosing technology vendors.

Some specific examples cited in the piece include vendors of electronic medical record systems. Practitioners cite issues after deployment of EMRs that vendors fail to address, ignoring initial.

The resulting advice is that practices need to consider technical support as a key component during the bidding and contract assessment process. The obligations of the vendor need to be clearly delineated should the need for technical support arise.

Failing that or if the vendor is unresponsive to requests for assistance, determining the person within the organization who can actually address issues is the next step. Again, knowing who that person may be before incidents happen is the best strategy.
