Ambulatory EHR Guidelines Approved
The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT) finalized criteria (pdf) for certification of outpatient Electronic Health Records (EHR), released March 19th.
The criteria will be implemented May 1st, at which point CCHIT will accept applications for software certification. Standards implemented this year include requirements for electronic submission of prescription orders and refills to pharmacies, as well as the ability to receive laboratory results electronically within a standard template. CCHIT first certified EHR products in July 2006.
CCHIT also approved test scripts for inpatient EHRs. They requested comments from the healthcare community in the ongoing process to develop appropriate certification guidelines.
CCHIT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing guidance in EHR development for the healthcare community.
