Database with Regulatory Timelines Published

The Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange Timeline Initiative (WEDI) and the North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communication Alliance, Incorporated (NCHICA) published their first database (pdf) that includes estimates in the timeline for the proposed healthcare regulations, standards, and initiatives from national standards organizations, including the federal government. This was reported by WEDI.Release of the database is noteworthy because the newest ICD-10 clinical coding system requires completion of the 5010 transactions, implementation of such allows processing of ICD-10 codes. Key issues relevant to implementation of 5010 transactions are being identified utilizing project management software. By engaging in this step now, the time required to complete 5010 implementation can be abbreviated at facilities that utilize this new tool.

NCHICA suggests that the most effective approach to implementing the new federal regulations and others that come forth requires a project management format, fostered with the new database. The database can be used as a tool for healthcare facilities to determine internal timelines for implementing various regulations. The tool incorporates dates by which varied steps need to be completed, as well as how implementation is influenced by other factors.

They estimate that the final rules for 5010 will be completed in 2010, assuming the initial proposed rule is published in June of next year. The collaborative work of NCHICA and WEDI includes ongoing updates to the database of guidelines, including those related to e-prescribing, acknowledgments, attachments, and NCPDP D.O.
