New Radiation Therapy System Cleared
New radiation therapy technology, TomoDirect, from TomoTherapy, Incorporated received marketing approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This tool is designed to work with the company’s Hi-Art treatment system, which was approved last summer.
The new system supports a discrete-angle, sliding beam delivery mode of radiation therapy. This delivery method complements helical TomoTherapy. The combined features support rapid treatment planning, along with fast delivery of such which may result in financial benefits.
The system, like TomoTherapy, uses a binary multi-leaf collimator and CT-style gantry technology. These features enable clinicians to choose the most appropriate angles to deliver radiation, as well as the modulation level.
Another advantage of this system is that it broadens the range of people who are eligible for treatment with this system. The TomoTherapy radiation treatment systems are considered next generation.
The company plans to showcase the system at the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology in Sweden next month.
