Speech Vendors Ranked by KLAS
The Speech Recognition report was recently released from KLAS; it assesses both front-and back-end vendors of speech recognition technology. The company issued the report in light of the increased use of speech recognition. This tool can increase data flow and documentation.
Over 300 healthcare professionals were interviewed about speech recognition software used in their facilities, which allows assessment based on actual experience in the hospital setting. At least 15 organizations had to rate a vendor system in order for it to be included in the analysis.
Each of the vendor programs included in the assessment utilizes a common set of speech engines, such as Philips’ SpeechMagic and Nuanace’s Dragon. Differences in the varied speech recognition systems include the various bolt-on technologies which are attached to each speech engine. The attachments include administrative tools, provider-driven workflows, and user interfaces.
In considering various front-end speech recognition systems, Nuance’s RadWhere program received top marks for overall performance. The following products with top marks, in consecutive order, included PowerScribe from Nuance, SpeechQ from MedQuist, and TalkStation from Agfa.
With respect to back-end speech recognition systems, another Nuance product received top marks for overall performance, the eScription EditScript. The systems ranked next include Fusion Speech from Dolbey, and EXSpeech from Nuance/Dictaphone. Back-end systems received higher overall ratings compared to front-end tools.
Features and functionality are key components that drive satisfaction. The KLAS assessment indicates that a number of other factors relate to ratings and satisfaction with the speech recognition products besides the software itself. Those include service and knowledge of staff personnel.
