Kansas Passes Healthcare Legislation
Joining the ranks of other state legislatures with an eye on addressing healthcare costs and uninsured residents, Kansas passed bipartisan legislation (pdf) to assess current health insurance programs and also extend the number of persons eligible for coverage under Medicaid.
The bill outlines a plan to study the potential options to expand healthcare coverage for state residents. Options to be assessed include making Medicaid private, subsidizing private insurance programs, and expanding state-sponsored programs. Data will be collected and evaluated for presentation at next year’s return to legislative sessions.
The bill also includes expanded screening at birth, creation of an agency to oversee potential abuses of the Medicaid system, and designation of funds to support groups who have difficulty obtaining health insurance.
