Nerve Stimulation Treats Voiding Dysfunction

Patients with voiding dysfunction are faced with daily challenges battling one of the most common of body routines to which the average person doesn’t give a second thought. Many of these patients are left with few options aside from catheterization.

Approved over ten years ago, Medtronic Inc. developed InterStim Therapy as an option for patients with urinary urge incontinence. Approval was later expanded for patients with non-obstructive urinary retention and frequency-urinary syndrome.

The treatment targets sacral nerve roots with a mild electrical signal from the surgically implanted device.  This modulates behavior of the bladder, sphincter, and pelvic floor musculature.

Device placement can be completed under local anaesthesia and is minimally invasive. A subcutaneous neurostimulator is placed on the patient which can be modified for appropriate control.
