New Sterilization-Friendly RFID Tag Introduced
To expand the utility of RFID tags used with tools and devices that require sterilization, Awarepoint introduced a new RFID tag that can undergo the sterilization processes with either liquid sterilization or steam autoclave, the T2S Asset Tag. News of the product launch was described in the 24×7 Weekly Jolt.
The new tag was tested to ensure that it can endure the extreme conditions associated with sterilization, including temperatures up to 135 C such as employed during autoclave. The T2S can also withstand immersion in common liquid sterilization solutions.
In addition to being able to monitor the location of assets, this new system incorporates monitoring of sterilization processes. Tracking is specific enough to note if devices do not travel appropriately through sterilization processes.
The RFID system linked to the T2S tag can alert staff members if there were issues encountered during the sterilization process. Responsible parties can be notified by a variety of means, including pager, system reporting, and email.
This advancement is particularly beneficial for tracking medical-surgical equipment. Equipment used multiple times in that arena requires sterilization, which was not amenable with previously available tags. Availability of the T2S can allow healthcare facilities to expand their RFID system to track other materials, such as surgical tools and equipment.
